About AMC 8

The foundational US national mathematics competition administered by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), serving as the first step toward national math honors.

The American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8) isnโ€™t just another middle school math testโ€”itโ€™s the gateway to the US Math Olympiad track. Administered by the Mathematical Association of America, this 25-question, 40-minute exam requires students to apply standard middle school concepts to highly non-standard, multi-step puzzles. Because there is no penalty for guessing, the real challenge lies in time management and the dreaded "final five" questions, which separate average test-takers from Honor Roll recipients.

AMC 8 Exam Format & Focus

25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice exam covering middle school mathematics topics including probability, estimation, elementary geometry, and number theory.

How Skillzy Young Scholars Prepares Students for AMC 8

Skillzy Young Scholars delivers a comprehensive curriculum focusing on time-management strategies, strategic guessing, and mastering the tricky "final 5" questions that separate top scorers from Honor Roll recipients.

We start with a full-length diagnostic to pinpoint exact gaps in number theory, combinatorics, or geometry. From there, our 10-12 week prep cycle focuses on high-yield topics, emphasizing speed-math shortcuts and strategic guessing. We spend significant time analyzing the error log, ensuring students understand why they got a question wrong before moving on to timed mock exams.

What AMC 8 Covers

  • Arithmetic, fractions, ratios and percents
  • Basic algebra: patterns, simple equations and word problems
  • Geometry: area, perimeter, angles, similar figures and the Pythagorean theorem
  • Counting and probability: lists, arrangements and simple chance
  • Number theory: factors, multiples, primes and divisibility
  • Logic and estimation, with no calculator allowed

AMC 8 Syllabus: Key Topics

  • Advanced Combinatorics: Calculating probability, permutations, and arrangements without relying solely on brute-force listing.
  • Number Theory: Prime factorization, divisibility rules, and modular arithmetic shortcuts.
  • Spatial Geometry: Area, perimeter, and the Pythagorean theorem applied to complex, unlabelled diagrams.

Sample AMC 8 Prep Plan

  • Weeks 1-2: diagnostic test, then rebuild the arithmetic and fraction fundamentals the exam assumes.
  • Weeks 3-6: one topic block per week (geometry, counting, number theory, algebra) with problems graded from easy to hard.
  • Weeks 7-9: past-style problems in timed sets, learning which questions to skip and return to.
  • Weeks 10-12: full 40-minute mock exams, error analysis, and a final pass on the last 5 questions.

Common AMC 8 Mistakes We Help Students Avoid

  • Spending too long on early questions and never reaching the hardest ones.
  • Guessing blindly. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so every question should get an answer, but an informed one.
  • Skipping diagrams. Many AMC 8 problems are solved faster once the figure is redrawn.

Every student starts with a diagnostic assessment so we can see exactly where the gaps are. We then build a personalised prep plan, teach the concepts behind each question type, and practise under timed conditions. Every wrong answer is analysed so the same mistake does not repeat. Parents receive monthly progress reports and can see improvement clearly over time.

AMC 8 Coaching FAQ

What is a good score on the AMC 8? โ–พ
Scores vary by year. The MAA gives Honor Roll to roughly the top 5% of participants and Distinguished Honor Roll to roughly the top 1%, and the exact score needed changes every year. After a diagnostic we help families set a realistic target.
Can my 5th grader take the AMC 8? โ–พ
Yes. Any student in grade 8 or below (under 14.5 years of age) can participate. We regularly coach advanced 4th and 5th graders who use the AMC 8 to build early problem-solving resilience.
Are calculators allowed on the AMC 8? โ–พ
No, the MAA does not allow calculators on the AMC 8. This is why our prep emphasizes mental math speed and estimation techniques.
Who is AMC 8 coaching for? โ–พ
Grade 8 and below (Under 14.5 years). Not sure where your child should start? Book a free counselling session and we will recommend the right level.
How early should we start AMC 8 prep? โ–พ
For competitions, we recommend starting 4-6 months before the exam, because the problem-solving skills take time to build.
Is your AMC 8 coaching live and online? โ–พ
Yes. All Skillzy Young Scholars classes are 100% live online, 50 minutes per session, with small batches of at most 4 students (1:1 sessions are also available).
Do you guarantee score improvements? โ–พ
We cannot guarantee specific scores, but students who follow the prep plan consistently show steady improvement, and parents see progress in monthly reports.
How do we get started with AMC 8 prep? โ–พ
Book a free demo and a 1:1 counselling session. We start with a diagnostic, then build a custom prep plan. No commitment is required.
