About MATHCOUNTS

The premier national middle school coaching and competition program in the US, progressing through School, Chapter, State, and National levels.

MATHCOUNTS Exam Format & Focus

Features four distinct rounds: Sprint (speed & accuracy without calculator), Target (multi-step problem solving with calculator), Team (collaboration), and Countdown (fast-paced head-to-head oral round).

How Skillzy Young Scholars Prepares Students for MATHCOUNTS

Skillzy Young Scholars provides specialized preparation targeting high-speed mental math, algebraic shortcuts, counting/probability techniques, and targeted sprint mock tests under real contest conditions.

What MATHCOUNTS Covers

  • Arithmetic, ratios, percents and unit conversion
  • Algebra: linear equations, systems and basic functions
  • Geometry: perimeter, area, volume, angles and the Pythagorean theorem
  • Counting and probability, including arrangements and simple combinations
  • Number theory and statistics: primes, divisibility, mean, median and mode

Sample MATHCOUNTS Prep Plan

  • Weeks 1-2: diagnostic test and a mental-math and formula review for Sprint-round speed.
  • Weeks 3-7: one topic per week, using problems at the level of each contest stage (School, Chapter, State).
  • Weeks 8-10: Target-round multi-step problems and Team-round communication practice.
  • Weeks 11-12: timed Sprint and Target mocks and Countdown-style oral drills.

Common MATHCOUNTS Mistakes We Help Students Avoid

  • Skipping the speed work. Sprint rewards fast, accurate arithmetic without a calculator.
  • Rushing Target problems. They have several steps, and one slip ruins the answer.
  • Not practising the Countdown round, which is a different skill from written tests.

Every student starts with a diagnostic assessment so we can see exactly where the gaps are. We then build a personalised prep plan, teach the concepts behind each question type, and practise under timed conditions. Every wrong answer is analysed so the same mistake does not repeat. Parents receive monthly progress reports and can see improvement clearly over time.
